Practical Wisdom for Cultivating Happiness
What does it mean to
“Live with Perspective”
When we spotlight our inner strengths, what’s working well in our life, and become more mindful and appreciative of the good, we are cultivating happiness, increasing our wellbeing, and creating a more successful life.
We know from scientific research, as well as our own experience, that we have a tendency to focus on the negative things around us and within us. That’s why we need to shift our perspective to the positive, so that we actively notice our strengths and our potential for becoming happier.
This doesn’t mean we should never experience, or even block difficult emotions such as sadness, fear, or frustration. Instead, we should allow ourselves to feel the full range of human emotions, while opening ourselves up to experiencing and savoring the joy, awe and laughter that life inevitably brings.I use this strengths-focused, appreciative approach with all of my clients, from those raising and educating the next generation, to individuals seeking greater meaning and purpose, to people pursuing their personal or organizational goals for positive change.
Life Coaching or Psychotherapy?
Both psychotherapy and life coaching are practices that help people live healthier lives. While they share many things in common, there are some fundamental differences. Psychotherapists diagnose psychopathology, focus on symptoms, provide psychological counseling, and help to resolve clients’ traumas and psychological pain. Psychotherapists generally hold licenses to provide treatment that is covered by insurance plans.
Life coaches approach clients from a neutral perspective, with the intention of helping them make life decisions and create positive change to improve their lives. As a certified positive psychology coach, I was trained in proven methods to facilitate a a person’s process of clarifying what they want, taking steps to reach their goals, and sustaining their motivation to get there.
Here are some examples of how I have helped clients through positive psychology coaching:
I coached a client to turn around a lukewarm evaluation of her job performance to improve her professional skills, guided her to revise her resume, and find a new, more satisfying job where her managers appreciated her strengths and contributions.
I worked with someone who had several ambitious professional aspirations, and felt overwhelmed and stuck. At the same time, she was struggling to recover from some physical health challenges. During our coaching engagement, she was able to prioritize her goals, take small, manageable steps towards her most important one, while not further compromising her health. In our time together, she learned to practice self-compassion, value her strengths, find hope, develop new positive habits, and reignite her motivation to achieve meaning and attain success.
I helped a family shift from their tendency to focus on their child’s deficits and desire to “fix” them, to seeing their character strengths and potential to be successful at school and in life. This new perspective sparked positive change for the entire family. The number and intensity of their daily arguments dramatically decreased, and the family began to enjoy a new atmosphere of appreciation, and an overall happier household.
Many of my clients have been in therapy, or are receiving psychological counseling throughout our coaching engagement. Sometimes issues come up during our coaching sessions that would be better addressed through psychotherapy, and I coach them through the process of choosing a therapist who they feel is most compatible with them and the issues they need to work on.
If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, not sure of yourself, or are having difficulty figuring out what you really want, and how to get there, let’s talk about how I might help you through positive psychology coaching.
